About GlassDrive

Who we are

GlassDrive is an independent UK temporary car cover consultancy. We sit between drivers and a panel of private underwriters who actually carry the risk on each policy. Every certificate of motor insurance we arrange is issued by one of those underwriters — we don't underwrite cover ourselves.

The model is deliberate. Each underwriter on a temporary-cover panel has its own pricing algorithm, age thresholds, vehicle-value caps, and appetite for non-standard risks. A single-underwriter app gives you one price. A consultancy that searches a panel gives you the best valid price across all of them. The maths shifts depending on driver, vehicle, postcode, cover length, and claims history — which is exactly what a market-search is built to handle.

What we believe

A few principles we don't deviate from:

  • No auto-renewal. Temporary cover should end automatically when the cover window closes. We don't sell anything that quietly turns into a recurring charge.
  • No email-wall on quotes. You shouldn't have to hand over an email address to find out a price.
  • Honest comparison. If a provider on the panel beats us on price, we say so. If your situation is one where annual cover would be cheaper than the temporary route, we say that too.
  • Plain English. Motor insurance is full of jargon that exists to confuse customers. We'd rather lose a sale than ship a policy you didn't fully understand.

How we make money

We charge a small consultancy fee, built into the quoted price. We don't take commission that depends on which underwriter you end up with — our algorithm picks the cheapest valid quote on the panel regardless of which provider it came from. You pay one transparent total at checkout; the underwriter receives their share, we receive ours.

For your very first hour through us, we waive our consultancy fee entirely with code ONE4ONE — £1.00 total for the first hour of temporary cover, so you can try the service properly before paying full price. See the offer terms.

What we cover

The bread-and-butter is hourly, daily, and weekly comprehensive cover for UK-registered cars and vans. We arrange:

  • Hourly cover from 1 hour upwards for short borrows, test drives, MOT trips, and emergency journeys.
  • Daily and weekly cover for moving day, weddings, long trips, and intensive learner practice.
  • Monthly cover where the duration justifies it.
  • Learner cover with the supervisor / L-plate / motorway rules baked in.
  • Temporary van cover for moving house and short business jobs.

For details on what each window costs, when it's the right choice, and where the alternatives win, the blog has long-form guides on hourly cover, learner cover, van cover, and the break-even maths against annual policies.

Regulation

The underwriters we work with are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Their FCA reference numbers appear on the policy schedule for each cover you buy.

GlassDrive itself acts as an introducer and consultancy. If you have a complaint about anything we've done — pricing, communication, the consultancy fee — please contact us first and we'll respond within 3 working days. If you're not satisfied with our response, the Financial Ombudsman Service is available to you free of charge.

Have questions?

The FAQ covers the most common questions — eligibility, claims, NCB, learner cover, documents, refunds. The blog goes deeper on specific situations. If you've got a question we haven't answered, email us — we read everything.
